West Brazos Tritons Repeat National Title
Galveston, TX Saturday July 22, 2006
The West Brazos Tritons U-8 Academy
team successfully defended their title at the Mrs. Bairds National
Championships. The team qualified earlier this summer at the Sugarland
regional and then met regional champions from other regions of Austin
(Maelstrom), San Antonio (Strikers), Louisiana (St. Johns Warriors) and the
WB Tritons Blue team. The Tritons White team took second in group play to
advance to the championship game. Players Joshua Randon, Elijah Smith,
Joshua McKenzie, and Conner Stewart were met in the final by the San Antonio
Strikers in a rematch of their 4-2-loss in-group play. The final was a
battle with Tritons battling back from 2-1 and 4 -2 deficits to draw 4-4 in
regulation. Smith almost won the game on a overhead kick and header late in
regulation time after tying the game on a blast from the centerline. The
game went into 5 minutes of sudden death overtime and then 2 round of
penalty kicks before Randon and McKenzie struck the winning penalty kicks.

Stewart put the opposing team on the defensive time and again throughout the
tournament with long strikes on goal for flashing Tritons players. Tritons
coach commented, "Playing with one substitute we came to get a lot of strong
competition and work against top shelf opponents. The players refused to
lose in the final playing the last 3 minutes at the highest level of skill,
tactics and athleticism I have seen for this age players. In 5 games they
got stronger and stronger." The Tritons White team also played strong games
through the group play. Noah Davis, Oseas Espinoza, Nicholas Solis, Zachary
Ramirez, and Mario Servin battled the 4 other regional champions in-group
play. The final game versus the St. Johns Warriors was battle to a narrow
1-0 loss, but prevented the Warriors from advancing to the final opening the
door for the other Tritons team.
Congratulations to West Brazos Tritons on the consecutive National Championships. |

Local Team Takes National Stage
Saturday Feb. 25th 2006 - Houston, TX.
The West Brazos Triton U-8 Boys Academy
played a prominent role in the 2006 Adidas Coaching Workshop at the U.S.
Youth Soccer Convention this weekend. The National Youth Director of
Coaching, Sam Snow, worked with the Triton’s as the Under 8 example
team for a Saturday morning demonstration session from 9 - 10:15 AM,
showing discovery learning activities for this age group. This soccer
training approach is taught in the state soccer coaching modules and the
National Youth license for age-appropriate, games-approach to training.

Last year USYSA released “The Novice Coach” DVD as instructional teaching
for all youth soccer coaches with the U-6, U-8, and U-10 players. The field
session built on the earlier classroom presentations by Sam Snow.
This DVD is available through USYSA (www.usyouthsoccer.org) and
is in local libraries. The concepts apply to any other team sports
showing fun training activities appropriate to each age group.

The conference is an annual event with the U.S. Youth Soccer attended by
each states’ presidents/administrators, Olympic development coaches
and staff, and top level coaches/directors of coaching from clubs and
associations in all 50 states. South
Texas’s own U-17 Olympic development team participated in the workshop
session on “Anything Goes Soccer”™. International coaches from England’s Football Association were
in large attendance at this year’s conference. Major League Soccer (MLS) was present, as all attendees were
excited about Houston’s new professional soccer team. The 2007 conference will be held in St. Louis, MO.
West Brazos also had U-6 players participating with Sam Snow and
U12 girls participating in a session with Horst Wein, who is currently
working on coach and player development at the Royal Spanish Soccer
Federation in Barcelona Spain |

The Tritons have accomplished a great amount
of development and achievement in 8 tournaments, 9 months of
training, and at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Convention.
Comments by Houston area coaches and Austin, San Antonio,
and Louisiana regional qualifiers on our players skill level
and tactics indicate the academy program has been highly
successful. The repeat of the Mrs. Bairds 3v3 National Title
was a great accomplishment for these players.

2006/2007 Tritons Academy
The West Brazos Tritons
Academy completed an exciting U9 season with up to 28
players participating in training, tournament, and/or spring
soccer. The academy took part in 7 tournaments as
weather forced some tournament cancellation. 2 and 3
teams were entered in many of these tournaments. The
Academy took first in 3 U-9 tournaments; the Fusion Winter
Classic, Houstonians Gol4, and the Houston Quickfoot
Regional Qualifier. |

|
|
| |
The academy fielded a team in
the Lake Jackson Spring soccer league play and had a great
time playing typically 2 games on Saturday mornings all
spring. |

|

Through-out the Winter, Spring,
and Summer play the academy faced strong development/academy
teams from Houston area programs like West University,
Fusion, Houstonians F.C. and program’s as far away as
Louisiana, Bryan, San Antonio, and Dallas. In the
summer months the academy participated in several U-10
tournaments including the MLS Futbolito and the Copita de
Americas. The strong competition from U-10 teams, who
were working for Div. II and Div. I placement this fall was
great experience for these players.
The season
concluded with the Quickfoot National Championship in the
Dallas area at McKinney, TX. The top teams from the 8
regional qualifiers met in Dallas to determine this year’s
National Champ. The Tritons had won this the last 2
years with tournaments held in Galveston. The Tritons
faced stiff competition with the Dallas area champion
“Dynamo ‘98”, San Antonio area champion “Arsenal”, and the
Plano area team “the Wild”. The Tritons missed making
the final but placed 3rd with a win in a double
overtime third place game that was decided in PK shootouts.
Coach Stewart commented, “We came to play the region’s top
teams and we did well against them. These fields are
like golf greens and the style of play is professional in
the passing and play making. It was great for the
Triton players to experience this as 9 year olds and will
only help our soccer development.” The Dallas Dynamo
’98 went on to win the tournament. They rank 3rd
Nationally in Kick-it 3v3 with players like Simo Valikari’s
(Finland National Team Midfielder and MLS All-star) oldest
son playing for their club. |

The West
Brazos Tritons will break for the Fall Recreational season
locally and resume training and development in November.
The academy welcomes all interested area U-10 players to

cost.
