How much does a referee for WBSC get paid?
Referee compensation is per game and is based on the age levels involved:
$12 for U6 games
$15 for U7 and U8 games
$17 for U9 and U10 games
$20 - center referee, $10 - side referee for U11 and U12 games
$25 - center referee, $12 - side referee for U13+ games
How do I become a referee?
You must be a licensed referee to serve WBSC. Please visit www.stsr.org for full details and course availability.
Grade 8 and Grade 9 referees are the most common.
Do I have to pay money to take the referee course?
Yes. However, by refereeing a minimum of 10 games in a season you will be eligible for reimbursement by WBSC.
Note, this is only applicable to the license and course fees. We do not reimburse you for your uniform and other equipment.
There are other details that should be discussed with the referee co-ordinator that may effect your eligibility for reimbursement
(i.e. excessive complaints, tardiness/absence at assigned games, etc.)
How much does the course cost?
Per the current STSR fees, the entry course and license cost is $80 and is fully eligible for reimbursement.
Additionally, you will need to procure a uniform, whistle, time-piece, etc. at your own cost. These costs are NOT eligible for reimbursement.
How are games assigned?
The referee coordinator will work with your schedule to match the available games each week. As a referee you will agree to the games you have been assigned.
In general, you should be prepared to referee all the games that you are licensed to referee.
How old do I have to be to referee?
There is no strict age limit. WBSC recommends an age of 13 years; however, some experienced players younger than this have been successful referees in the past.
The referee license requires passing a test written at the 9th grade reading level in the english language. This is occassionally an obstacle and should
be considered for potential youth referees. Please contact the referee coordinator to discuss any concerns you may have.
How many referees are needed?
There are no living past or present board members who ever remember a time when we had too many referees. We will need you.
Per BYSA by-laws, each team U9 or older should have a referee representative. This means we are required (in theory) to have a referee for every U9 or older team that we form.
If we have so many referees that you cannot be assigned 10 games we will still allow you to be eligible for your clinic reimbursement.
Who do I talk to if I have more questions?
Please direct referee specific questions to the referee co-ordinator: rc@westbrazossoccer.org
